about

While the latter-day Gizmos are still (occasionally) rockin', proud Hoosier perv-rocker Mykal Xul wants to make sure the original sound of the Ken Highland/Eddie Flowers era of the band stays alive and well! And what better place to start than with some tunes originally intended for the Gizmos?! Under the production and spiritual guidance of original Gizmos mastermind/Gulcher CEO Bob "Bear" Richert, Xul has crafted a 12-song atavism schism of proto-punk in glorious worship to Ken Highland's Gizmos!!

The True Story Behind Gizmo My Way:

I'd been in a sour mood for weeks since my band (Mykal Xul Project) had fallen apart, when I was scouring through an Indy music website and read of a Gizmos tribute disc being planned. Being a Giz-thusiast, but still without a band, I e-mailed Gulcher proprietor Bob Richert about wanting to contribute a cut. When Bob wrote back, he mentioned Gulcher was looking for covers of lesser-known Gizmos songs which hadn't appeared on any of the band's original 1976-78 EPs. So I asked if any of Ken Highland's demo/rehearsal tracks, or songs recorded by his post-Giz group the Afrika Korps, were the way to go. Bob assured me that those tunes would work fine, as they were originally meant for the Gizmos to start with.

So I got right down to buisness in my little home studio (affectionately known as the Plunder Room). With the aid of some drum software I cut three songs (one of which, the Korps' "Nobody's Girl," appears on this album) and sent them off to Bob for his approval. Upon hearing my submissions, Bob decided against the rather passe tribute idea and offered me the chance to cut an entire album of lost Highland-era Gizmos songs. Of course I jumped at the chance! Armed with demos and lead sheets for some otherwise unfinished songs I got to work, learning, recording, mixing (and in a couple cases rewriting and rearranging) the twelve tunes that comprise Gizmo My Way. Bob co-produced via e-mail and mentored me through the entire project.

Among the tracklist are nascent Kenny Gizmo gems "She Put A Spell On Me" and "Dance To The Beat"; A-Korps Music To Kill By cuts "Juvenile Delinquent," "Refrigerator Rappin'," and "Lorraine"; previously unsung Highland anthems "Creem Dream" and "Ode to Adny's Dics"; plus a three-decade time warp collaboration, the cybersex salute "Webzine Pussy." Rounding out the dozen compositions penned by the prolific Krazee Ken are "Hot Shot," "Ready Eddie," and "Talkin' On The Telephone."

No, Gizmo My Way isn't a long-awaited full-length Gizmos album, but we've definitely brought some lost classics back home.
